Moon and Water

Moon and water! Rings any bells? Not yet?

Okay, Moon and Sea water?? Hope it does now b’cause you must have heard of the famous high and low tides phenomenon when the moon is full in the sky. It could have been very obvious for me to conclude that since we, humans, are also made up of 70% water, we are highly affected by the cycles of moon. But its not limited to just that. There is not just the gravitational pull of moon affecting us. There is vibrational effect as well.

If mythology is to be believed, worshiping lord shiva on mondays is very auspicious. And also to offer “water” to the shivling specially on mondays. (To see why Monday is the day of Moon, refer here.)
Let us look in detail. Lord Shiva is believed to have moon on his forehead and the holy waters of Ganges in his dreadlocks. But did you ever wondered what it could mean? Okay, think about this..Does taking a shower/head bath at the end of an emotionally stressful day helps you? It certainly clears up the mental clutter, isn’t it? Voila!!

Astrology principles are also in the same line. Moon signifies mind or emotions in astrology and its element is water. And that is the reason there is so much of importance of “snaan” (taking a dip in river waters or bathing) in most of the festivals in Indian culture, the water aids in clearing up mental clutter and past emotional baggages. Since the festivals are celebrated based on lunar calendar, it is quite evident that our forefathers knew about the connection of moon with water.

We also know and feel this connection too, but often we are too ignorant. Our deep emotional musings often translates into dreams at night involving water. Deep emotional experiences bring out tears from eyes.

Astrologically, Moon rules the zodiac sign of cancer which again is a water element sign. Moon signifies mind and mother in one’s birth chart. Moon is the planet of feminine principal. Its a receptive planet. It does not have its own luminescence, but it reflects the light of sun. Alike, Water does not have its own color. Science is recently discovering that not just color, water acquires many other properties in its molecules based on the surroundings it is subjected to. Water registers and reflects any frequency it is exposed to..even sounds.

Interestingly, that full moon of the year when moon is quite close to the earth, is celebrated as Kartik Purnima in hinduism and jainism and as Gurupurab in sikhism. Its even more interesting to note that there is huge importance of snaan on this auspicious day in hinduism, who celebrate it as Tripurari Purnima and worship Lord Shiva this day.

Fun Fact : – In Cambodia also, the Cambodian Water festival “Bon Om Tuk” is celebrated around the same day as kartik purnima.

There exists a very deep coherence between our mythology, astrology and the science. What are your thoughts on this?
